5 Things to Think About When You're Redecorating

1. Study magazines and books to get an idea of the "look" you want. Visit home shows, display rooms and model homes and collect images to help you communicate your wishes to your designer. Together you can determine your style and explore options.

2. Consider the 3 elements of successful design:

2.1 A room should be functional:
• The foundation of a comprehensive interior design plan includes accurate dimensions of your living space and furniture you wish to keep.
• Space plan to ensure good flow and watch for traffic patterns
• Consider proportion & scale of furniture in relation to each other and to the space.

2.2 A room should express a mood:
• Whether relaxed or formal, contemporary or traditional, colour, furnishings and accessories create a mood that has a strong impact on you and your guests in that space.

2.3. A room should exhibit a sense of harmony:
• Welcoming and comfortable surroundings can be achieved through a number of means including through the use of repetition & balance.

3. Achieving a coordinated and well thought-out décor takes time. Look at your fabric swatches, paint colours and finishes & how they all relate to each other before rushing decisions. Enjoy the process.

4. Select your investment pieces carefully: your sofa, dining room table & chairs and master bedroom furniture are likely to be with you a long time. Choose items that are simple and classic & won’t lock you into a particular style …unless you’re sure that’s what you want … for a long time.

5. Though it’s best to avoid decorating around something you don’t love, with skill and flair it’s possible to create a fabulous room around your existing furniture.
